Robin Hood, Flat Caps & Olympic Dreams - reflecting on the European Archery Championship

Posted on June 01, 2016

When a bank holiday comes around everyone is eager to make the most of their three day weekend, and we are no exception to the rule. We spent that extra day in the city famed for its connection with Robin Hood, rounding-off a project which saw us provide logistics services for the European Archery Championship.

For the past week our team has been working alongside Archery GB and their dedicated event staff and volunteers, to help deliver the European Archery Championship that culminated in two days of spectacular finals in Nottingham’s Old Market Square on Saturday and Sunday.

We were honoured to be a part of such a successful event in which Great Britain’s athletes put on a show for the home crowd. The men’s recurve team donned their trademark flat caps all the way to the final where they met Russia. The final went down to a shoot-off for the gold medal but Team GB missed out by a matter of millimetres.

B’s Patrick Huston, who was part of the men’s recurve team, also picked up his first ever senior European medal earning bronze in this individuals. His performance in the Continental Qualifying Tournament on Friday, also saw him secure a place for Great Britain in Rio this summer.

Both France and Ukraine also picked up significant wins during the championships. France’s JC Valladont won the men’s recurve gold, beating 16-year-old Mete Gazoz from Turkey in the final. Ukraine’s Veronika Marchenko put on a double gold medal-winning performance, taking top spot in the individual recurve and was part of the trio that won the women’s team gold.

While all of the action was going on, we were hard at work behind the scenes ensuring everyone involved got where they needed to be. The project was the latest in our long-established relationship with Archery GB which sees us provide both support and technology services to the NGB.

We have had a strong relationship with the archery fraternity both within the UK and internationally since establishing Sport:80 a number of years ago. We take great pride in working on these kinds of projects and hope to be involved in many more in the future.
